"This is a much more serious situation than last year," Mário Nogueira of Fenprof told Euronews. The teacher shortage is creating significant challenges for thousands of students."
"In the last six years, more than 14,500 teachers out of 120,000 or 130,000, that is, more than 10% of properly qualified young teachers, have left the profession," Nogueira said, emphasizing a critical need for solutions.
"Last year, at this time (the number of available teachers) would have been at around 100,000, which was already very serious... this shortage has naturally been getting worse," said Nogueira, signaling an urgent necessity to address the issue.
"Many would-be teachers in Portugal are giving up on the profession before practicing it, leading to a lack of young teachers," highlighting a worrying trend that hampers the future of education in Portugal.
