"So I am so excited about this policy, because for too long students have sat in schools, with their cell phone in their hand, distracted looking at TikTok dance videos. Anybody ever do that? You don't have to tell me here, that's all right. But do that at home, my friends. Do that at home. Do that somewhere else, Hochul said to the students."

New York City students returned to school on Sept. 4 for the first day of the academic year. Governor Kathy Hochul visited M.S. 582 in Brooklyn to welcome students and promote a new school cellphone ban being implemented this year. The policy aims to reduce distractions from phones and encourage in-person interaction, conversation, and learning during the school day. Hochul emphasized keeping phones for use at home rather than in class and urged students to talk and make friends. The governor introduced Frankie Focus, a phone-free mascot, and helped distribute pouches for storing phones during school hours.
