Many low-income and minority students withheld scores, wrongly assuming they were too low to get them in, showing that the policies intended to promote equity had unintended consequences.
We found solace in the objectivity of a hard number and a process that, unlike many things in our lives, we could control, and standardized tests provided our one shot to prove our potential.
