City Council Member Keith Powers emphasized the importance of the OMNY card for Manhattan students, stating, 'Many parents in my district are concerned that their children, especially those participating in after-school activities, are being excluded from free transit options. This exclusion affects thousands, including many special education students. We need to ensure that every child can access their school and after-school events equitably, much like their peers.'
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber noted the contradiction in current policies, saying, 'We want to ensure students involved in internships and who seek experiences can utilize the transit system. The goal is to provide four free rides per day, allowing them to fully participate in their city's activities and opportunities, but restrictions hinder these efforts.'
