"At least for this year, I can tell you that if you have a snow day, it will be a remote day," Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said during an event in Manhattan. This statement underscores the Department of Education's commitment to remote learning despite previous challenges.
"We need a good old fashioned snow day," said Keely Valk, whose children attend a school in Queens. She expresses the sentiment of many parents who feel that the removal of snow days is detrimental to their children's mental health and enjoyment.
The department's remote learning plan hit a snag in February, when a massive snowstorm forced schoolkids online. About 60% of parents reported issues with logging into the system, highlighting ongoing challenges with remote education.
After the disastrous rollout, the DOE ran a remote-learning simulation in June to better prepare for future incidents, but concerns about its effectiveness still linger among parents and students alike.
