The New York City School Construction Authority's plans to build a new elementary school across from a state Superfund site have raised safety concerns due to the contamination history.
'Being across the street from a Superfund site looks bad from a perception standpoint, but from an environmental standpoint, this is the cleanest site we found in Greenpoint,' said an SCA representative.
The SCA claims that 'none of those [alternative] sites were feasible for school construction,' citing Greenpoint's industrial history as a widespread issue.
An SCA representative assured, 'The contaminants will never reach the school site' and confirmed safety measures like a protective slab will be constructed.
