Gov. Kathy Hochul's proposed $252 billion budget lacks support for increasing charter schools, disappointing education-choice advocates. Critics argue that her decision aligns with teachers' union interests and jeopardizes educational opportunities for children. New York City has reached its charter school cap, blocking further growth without legislative action. While Hochul previously fought to raise the cap, the incremental increase fell short. Charter advocates, including minority educators, emphasize the need for options and quality education, urging a reconsideration before the April 1 budget deadline as families seek alternatives amid dissatisfaction with the current system.
Hochul blinked - big time, to the disadvantage of a lot of kids and families.
Unfortunately, Hochul appears more concerned with re-election than doing the right thing.
The charter school cap should be lifted. Kids should have access to an excellent education.
Parents are desperate for other educational options.
