The demise of the New York Regents exams and the Regents diploma is a sign of the educational times we live in; tests like the Regents provide proof that students have mastered required skills.
Ditching the Regents gives inferior teachers a free pass; it also deprives the best students from achieving accurate ranking in academic achievement throughout the state.
Once again, the teachers unions win and our students lose; the unions push for no more Regents testing to allow diplomas even for those who can’t read at grade level.
The equity philosophy represented in the removal of the Regents exams benefits the teachers at the expense of student accountability and standards.
