Nearly 5 years after schools closed, the nation gets a new report card
Briefly

New data from the Nation's Report Card reveals that while many students improved their math scores since the pandemic, most fourth and eighth graders still perform below pre-COVID levels. The decline in academic achievement actually started before the pandemic, highlighting deep-rooted issues in education. Federal funding aimed at addressing these disruptions has led to some modest gains; however, the report underscores the ongoing challenges educators and policymakers face in supporting student learning post-COVID.
In fourth grade, it seems that, regardless of where students were, they were improving, says Lisa Ashe, a math consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
While many students have made up some academic ground in math, most fourth- and eighth-graders still performed below the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
The achievement declines appear to have begun even before COVID-19, raising important questions about student struggles.
Although federal emergency funding led to modest academic gains, this new data shows students still have a long way to go.
