""I wanted African American youth to have a focus on the arts, that created an 'arts family,' that gave them a chance to try new things with top teachers," Carol said in a phone interview."
""The students are asked to put their phones down. It's amazing how quickly they form a unity when it's fun. [The camp] is disciplined, but playful," Carol said."
""I love to see their eyes light up. I tell them to talk to their parents and grandparents about [the music and arts] they loved," Carol said."
""We scour the bios to see experience and reviews," Carol said. During the interviews, she determines how committed the instructors are to the program."
Miss Faye Carol initiated the School of the Getdown Youth Arts Camp in 2023 to address the school-to-prison pipeline. The camp is free for Oakland youth aged 10-16, with a $100 application fee. It focuses on arts education, fostering a sense of community among participants. The camp includes various disciplines such as vocals, rap, gospel, and dance, culminating in a presentation for families. Carol emphasizes the importance of unity and engagement, encouraging students to connect with their musical heritage.
