Janis Marie Zivic was born July 17, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the youngest child of former world welterweight boxing champion Fritzie Zivic. Jan earned a master's degree in teaching from the University of Pittsburgh and taught American literature and a film elective at Upper St. Clair High School. After relocating to San Francisco, Jan worked in personnel at Crown Zellerbach and later founded The Zivic Group, Inc., an executive recruitment firm acquired by Spencer Stuart. In 1986 she raised her daughter Jessica with partner Paula Chamberlin. A 1998 truck collision caused traumatic brain injuries that ended her executive career. After rehabilitation she co-founded vibrantBrains and later earned an MFA from the University of San Francisco.
