Here are 3 big ways that parents and youth differ on AI
A Common Sense Media survey of over 1,200 parents and 1,100 youth aged 12-17 reveals substantial gaps in AI perspectives. Fifty-two percent of parents consider AI use for schoolwork unethical and deserving consequences, while 52% of youth believe it should be encouraged. Parents hold incorrect assumptions about youth AI usage patterns. Adults overestimate youth using AI for companionship (23% vs. 8%) and underestimate usage for brainstorming ideas (21% vs. 35%) and information searching (42% vs. 59%). These discrepancies highlight fundamental misunderstandings between generations regarding AI's educational applications and actual usage behaviors.
"Fifty-two percent of parents believe that the use of AI for school assignments is "unethical and deserves consequences." On the other hand, just 34% of youth hold that same position, while 52% think that using AI for school work is "innovative and should be encouraged.""
"For example, 23% of adults said that youth use AI primarily for companionship, while just 8% of youth said so. Parents also underestimate how much youth use AI for more basic tasks. Thirty-five percent of youth said they use AI mainly to brainstorm ideas, while just 21% of parents thought that was the case."
"Fifty-nine percent of youth said they use AI for searching for information and facts, a full 17 percentage points higher than what parents estimated, revealing significant gaps between parental perceptions and actual youth behavior regarding AI utilization for educational purposes."
