Harvard Medical School recently canceled a planned lecture featuring patients from the Gaza Strip amid concerns it would present a one-sided narrative on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The deans emphasized the importance of providing a balanced view and maintaining a non-polarized educational environment. The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some students expressing outrage. The cancellation comes during a period of heightened scrutiny regarding Harvard's handling of war-related protests and issues surrounding antisemitism on campus. Future plans for the event may still be considered, but details remain uncertain.
In the days since the session was first publicized last week, we heard from students and faculty members who expressed concerns about hearing from individuals impacted in Gaza without also hearing from individuals impacted in Israel.
The conflict continues to inflame passions and provoke divisions in our community, and it is our aim to ensure that HMS provides a constructive, non-polarized educational environment for students of all backgrounds and beliefs.
