Two free City College classes for San Francisco residents are offered at CCSF Mission Campus with start dates in September and differing weekly schedules. LBCS 114 (starts September 3) focuses on how public policy shapes workplaces, neighborhoods, criminal justice, and the environment, emphasizing local policy formation and how local organizations can influence outcomes; Occupy Oakland and the labor movement are included. ASAM 23 (starts September 30) provides an introduction to Asian and Pacific American experiences with governmental ideals and institutions. Courses emphasize improving writing and public speaking, oral history, critical pedagogy, and popular education. Registration is at www.ccsf.edu.
Writing and speaking well are related. As a former writing tutor and writing group facilitator we seek improvement of your writing. We further seek to improve public speaking skills in class. Both are needed in your community/labor activist toolkit. The focus is your hopes in social justice work, to contextualize them in U.S. social justice activism, and oral history, using critical pedagogy and popular education methods.
Public policy shapes our workplaces, neighborhoods, the criminal justice system, and the environment. This course examines the role of policy making in working class communities and communities of color. Particular attention will be given to local policy formation and the ways that local organizations can influence the process for the benefit of all. Occupy Oakland and the labor movement will be discussed.
