Florida's Department of Education has released a list of over 700 banned or removed books, doubling from last year, in response to House Bill 1069, prompting concerns of increased censorship in schools.
Members of the Florida Freedom to Read Project expressed that the sweeping removals are inspired by conservative groups and have drastically limited children’s access to diverse literature, stating, 'Censorship is happening right here in Florida.'
The organization pointed out the alarming trend, noting that classic American literature and contemporary works by acclaimed authors are being pulled from libraries, highlighting a troubling pattern of censorship.
PEN America noted that states like Florida have recorded the highest levels of book bans, further illustrating the ramifications of laws like HB 1069 on educational content access.
