Standardized testing results released today indicate a decline in literacy among Ontario students, with fewer meeting provincial standards in reading and writing compared to the previous year.
For Grade 3 students, 71 percent met the provincial standard in reading, which is down two percentage points from last year, and 64 percent in writing.
In Grade 6, the reading standard was met by 82 percent of students, also a two-point decrease, while writing compliance dropped from 84 percent to 80 percent.
In contrast, standardized results for math show a slight improvement but persistently low figures, with only 61 percent of Grade 3 and 50 percent of Grade 6 students meeting the standard.
