Faculty often don't get the break they need over the summer (opinion)
Briefly

Faculty members have it easy because they have summers off is a harmful misperception. In fact, faculty work most of the summer and don't receive fair compensation.
The false narratives about faculty's summer workload contribute to burnout. We need to challenge these assumptions and recognize the unseen labor that faculty engage in.
When asked about my summer, I often reply positively, omitting the resentment I feel over the expectation to work unpaid during that time.
What I really want to be asked is whether my summer left me feeling rested for the new academic year, acknowledging the need for genuine rest.
