"Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) standardized test results are set to be released next week after a delay. Results from the math and literacy testing are normally released earlier in the fall. But Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra said he wanted to take a deep dive this year before making them public. He has also suggested that some changes may be coming."
"Bell said the assessment only provides a snapshot of students' development and is unreliable. Whether it's students that have special education needs or students [where] English isn't their first language or students that live in poverty. They have so many other challenges that affect their learning in the classroom, Bell said. EQAO, having a standardized test on one day doesn't reflect them as learners. I don't think it's an effective tool. We have better ways of assessing our students."
EQAO standardized test results will be released next week after an unusual delay, with math and literacy results normally released earlier in the fall. Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra said he wanted to take a deep dive before making the results public and suggested that changes may be coming. Opposition figures questioned the delay and suggested the minister might be withholding results that reflect large class sizes and underfunded special education. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario criticized the assessment as an unreliable one-day snapshot that fails to reflect students with special needs, English-language learners, or students living in poverty, and advocated for better assessment methods.
