OUSD schools face a significant lack of cooling systems, leading parents at Sequoia Elementary to fundraise for portable AC units. In response to advocacy, OUSD has developed a districtwide plan for cooler classrooms, focusing on low-cost improvements like window films and blinds. By summer's end, every classroom will receive temperature sensors to guide future investments in HVAC upgrades. The plan is funded by an $8 million bond, with additional funding sought from federal and state sources due to increasing heat wave frequency and intensity.
