Cardiff University to cut 400 staff and drop subjects including nursing and music
Briefly

Cardiff University has announced intentions to eliminate 400 academic staff—almost 10% of its faculty—as part of financial restructuring measures. The proposed cuts come in response to a projected operating deficit of £31.2 million for the 2023-24 academic year and declining international student applications. Key subjects targeted include nursing, music, and modern languages, prompting outrage from faculty, unions, and students alike. Welsh government officials have expressed concern, particularly regarding nursing course reductions. A consultation period will follow, though the university hints at potential compulsory redundancies as they strive to adapt to future educational demands.
Academics, union representatives and students expressed shock and dismay at the scale of the cuts, which were announced at staff meetings at the Russell Group university on Tuesday.
The University and College Union described the reductions as cruel and said they would harm teachers and students not only at the university, but also across the country.
Prof Wendy Larner noted that it is no longer an option for the university to continue as it is, emphasizing the need for a refocused academic approach.
A government spokesperson expressed disappointment that nursing courses form part of these proposals, highlighting the broader implications for the healthcare workforce in Wales.
