Cambridge substitute teacher files discrimination suit against district
Sarah Heine, a 48-year-old licensed educator who uses a power wheelchair, has volunteered and substituted at Graham & Parks School for 12 years. Heine tutors four mornings weekly because she receives benefits and cannot work full time. Heine filed a lawsuit in Middlesex Superior Court alleging Principal Kathleen Smith removed her from a substitute platform and barred her from volunteering in September because of her disability. Cambridge Public Schools investigated Smith after parent complaints about her prior roles; an external inquiry found those allegations not substantiated. Heine says the removal was abrupt and damaging to her purpose and mental health.
"It seems reasonable to conclude that I was cancelled because I am in a wheelchair,"
"It's been really rewarding. It gives me a purpose and lets me use my education, and it's also good for my own mental health,"
"little interest in getting to know the students"
