BUSD pushes back on Trump, strengthens policy to protect immigrant families
Briefly

The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) reaffirmed its dedication to sheltering immigrant families by passing a resolution to establish safe zones in its schools. This action follows growing fears linked to potential mass deportations by the Trump administration and encourages collaboration with local organizations to support affected families with resources and emergency planning. The board also supports Senate Bill 48, aimed at creating safe areas around schools to protect students from ICE presence, demonstrating a proactive approach to mitigate community trauma and ensure educational safety for all students.
It's re-traumatization of our community, Beatriz Leyva-Cutler, a former BUSD board member and founder of Latinos Unidos, told Berkeleyside on Wednesday.
The resolution provides additional guidance to school sites and details about the rights of migrant students and families in Berkeley Unified.
The board members also agreed to write a letter in support of Senate Bill 48, introduced late last year by Democratic Sen. Lena Gonzalez of Long Beach.
If passed, the bill would create a 1-mile radius safe zone around schools with the aim of keeping ICE agents off campuses.
