Katharine Birbalsingh, headteacher of Michaela Community School, criticized Bridget Phillipson for her lack of interest in understanding the successes of academies. Birbalsingh emphasized that reforms allowing academies to operate with independence have significantly improved educational standards in England, as evidenced by improved international rankings in math and reading. She accused Phillipson of undermining these freedoms, which, she argued, is contradictory to her professed support for academies. Birbalsingh also expressed disappointment at Phillipson's failure to name top schools she had visited, suggesting a disconnect with successful educational models.
Academies have raised standards in England so enormously that on international league tables like Pisa, we've moved from 27th to seventh in maths.
Bridget Phillipson is now going to take those freedoms away from our academies, which essentially makes them into schools.
