American Children's Reading Skills Reach New Lows
Briefly

The latest federal test scores from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reveal a concerning trend in student achievement, particularly in reading. The percentage of eighth graders below basic reading skills has reached an unprecedented level of 33%, while 40% of fourth graders are also below basic— the highest in two decades. Although math scores saw some improvement, they were insufficient to balance the literacy declines evident across racial and socioeconomic lines. With new federal funding concerns arising, maintaining focus on these educational issues may prove challenging for educators moving forward.
The percentage of eighth graders who have below basic reading skills according to NAEP was the largest it has been in the exam's three-decade history 33 percent.
Recent reading declines have cut across lines of race and class, affecting struggling students the most despite efforts to improve foundational literacy skills.
