"I'm constantly having to self-police everything I say... Is this going to be the thing that gets me on Fox News and gets my teaching certificate revoked? That's what Saoirse Stone, a trans teacher in Florida, told The Advocate this week. Stone is an experienced English teacher, a position that Florida schools are having trouble keeping filled. But the state's aggressive anti-trans policies have made it impossible for her to stay."
Saoirse Stone, an experienced English teacher and trans woman in Florida, is relocating to Maryland because of the state's anti-trans policies. She describes living in constant fear of self-censorship, worried that any statement could be used against her, result in media exposure on Fox News, or lead to revocation of her teaching certificate. Despite Florida schools struggling to fill teaching positions, the hostile policy environment has made it impossible for Stone to continue her career in the state. She and her wife are saving money to make the move to Maryland, where they hope to find a more supportive environment.
