A nearly 100-year-old Catholic school in Medford is closing
"We simply cannot pass the growing costs of keeping the school open to families. The parish is not in a position to take on such expense and debt."
"For more than 97 years, St. Joseph has been a bedrock in our community. Our students graduate as models of our faith as well as responsible and accomplished members of society. To say this is a heart-wrenching decision is an understatement."
"In recent years, enrollment has steadily declined. Today, the school has 169 students, down from 222 in the 2021 to 2022 academic year. Add the increasing costs of educating and maintaining the buildings, and the operations have become unsustainable."
St. Joseph School, a pre-K through eighth-grade Catholic institution founded in 1929, is closing at the end of the school year. Enrollment has declined from 222 students in 2021-2022 to 169 currently, making operations financially unsustainable. The Archdiocese of Boston stated the parish cannot absorb growing maintenance and educational costs. The school employs 15 faculty and six staff members. To support affected families, the Archdiocese is offering tuition assistance through the Catholic Schools Foundation and prioritizing St. Joseph's staff for positions at other Catholic schools. A community petition opposing closure has gathered nearly 600 signatures.
