Safeway expands scope of SF store redevelopment in latest plans
Albertsons Companies and Align Real Estate submitted an application to San Francisco to build an 85-foot affordable housing structure anchored by a Safeway store. If approved, the existing Outer Richmond Safeway would be demolished and replaced with a nearly 766,000-square-foot project. The plan includes 520,600 square feet of housing, 179,900 square feet of parking, and 65,000 square feet of commercial space. The proposal calls for 562 housing units, including at least 112 affordable units, increasing from earlier plans. The application is under review, with feedback expected by the end of the month. The development is part of a broader effort to convert multiple Bay Area Safeway sites into mixed-use housing, including a separate Marina District proposal that has drawn local concerns.
"The project application is the latest collaboration between Albertsons Companies and Align Real Estate as they attempt to convert six Bay Area Safeway locations into mixed-use housing. Among the proposed projects is a 25-story housing development that would raze a 67-year-old Safeway in the Marina District, as previously reported by SFGATE. That project has raised concerns among locals, who believe the proposed project is oversized for the neighbor"
