Credit: Stackhouse De La Pena Trachtenberg Architects A planned eight-story North Berkeley apartment complex that got the green light from the City Council on Tuesday could be a preview of what's to come in that and other wealthy neighborhoods that have seen little recent housing development."
"While most of the city's recent housing construction has been geared toward UC Berkeley students, Kennedy has said this project is meant to appeal to empty-nesters, such as those who now live in the Berkeley Hills and want to downsize to an apartment that has the North Shattuck neighborhood's famed shops and restaurants a short walk away. It would provide more opportunities for young families to move to Berkeley,"
The Berkeley City Council voted unanimously to approve a planned eight-story, 110-unit apartment building at Shattuck Avenue and Virginia Street in North Berkeley. The project will replace a two-story Tudor-style building and nearby parking lots. Neighbors and a local alliance opposed the development as out of character for the North Shattuck commercial district. The developer says the building targets empty-nesters seeking walkable access to local shops and restaurants and argues the project will create opportunities for young families, allow longtime residents to stay in Berkeley, and generate substantial additional taxable property revenue.
