Another Bay Area Safeway store set to permanently close
"The Safeway at 231 W. Jackson St. in Hayward is slated to shutter on Feb. 2, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with state officials and reviewed by SFGATE. A spokesperson for Safeway told the San Francisco Chronicle that the decision to close the Hayward site "was not made lightly," yet coincided with the location's lease coming to an end. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)"
"A total of 76 employees including 41 food clerks are not expected to face layoffs, according to the WARN. All existing employees will transfer to nearby stores, but the "exact placement of positions has not yet been completed," the document said. Staffers will continue working on site after the store closes to the public to help with closing operations, the notice continued."
"Bay Area cities have faced a wave of Safeway closures within the past year. In February, the San Francisco Fillmore District store at 1335 Webster St. closed after 40 years. The following month, Safeway shuttered two Bay Area stores: one at 1421 Tara Hills Drive in Pinole and another at 774 Admiral Callaghan Lane in Vallejo. SFGATE reached out to Safeway for comment but did not hear back by publication."
