Several Berkeley and Castro Valley restaurants ceased operations in February and March 2026. Alley Yokocho Kitchens, a Japanese alley-style dining establishment near UC Berkeley, closed after serving tonkotsu ramen and chirashi bowls. Olfactory Brewing shut down its Berkeley taproom following the closure of its San Francisco location due to unsustainable operating costs. Mt. Agni, specializing in Nepali, Himalayan, and Indian cuisine, closed on the north side of campus. Vietnam House, a Vietnamese restaurant offering sandwiches, noodle soups, and boba, also shuttered, with Gusto, an Algerian halal restaurant, opening at the same location.
