The woman accused former Upward Bound teacher Osceola Free of years-long sexual abuse, claiming the UC program neglected its duty to protect her as a minor.
Free's approach allegedly included grooming tactics such as giving special attention, flirting, and encouraging the student to spend time alone with him, leading to the abuse.
In her lawsuit, the plaintiff also holds Upward Bound and the UC Regents accountable for negligence and a failure to report suspected child abuse over several years.
University officials decided not to comment on the ongoing case initially, with legal responses from both the regents and Free yet to be formalized before the court.
