This week in Oakland: Oaklash, Malcolm X JazzArts, and Greek festivals
"This year’s queer culture festival will kick off on Thursday with a fundraiser dance party for the organization at Thee Stork Club and continue on Friday with a rave at a laundromat in East Oakland, where Euphemia and DJ Queer Mom will be spinning all night. The headline event is Saturday’s block party in Old Oakland with two stages, 60 performers, seven DJs, 50 food and art vendors, and what organizers say will be “thousands of queer and trans people living their fantasy.”"
"Plus, all the performances will be ASL interpreted. If you still have energy after the block party, there’s an after party at CryBaby. To close out the festival, Oaklash will feature a sonic celebration of the Black diaspora on Sunday at the Night Heron. The organizers want the festival to be accessible to everyone, so no one will be turned away for lack of funds."
"Oakland hosts a rich array of festivals where you can experience a wide variety of cultures and cuisines. This week, Oaklash, the celebration of queer Oakland, takes over venues around town starting on Thursday for drag performances, dancing, and more. The Greek Festival will have food demonstrations, choir and dance performances and lots of tasty treats. And, in East Oakland, the Malcolm X JazzArts Festival will take over San Antonio Park for a day full of jazz, hip hop and spoken word for the whole family."
