The Athletic Club is back with a new team betting on Oakland
Timing affects how athletes execute plays and how a sports bar performs financially. A local bar opened in 2018 during a period when Oakland had multiple major teams and a thriving Uptown neighborhood. The bar faced major disruptions as the Raiders left in 2019, the Warriors moved to a new arena, and the hospitality industry was damaged by Covid. The A’s later relocated to Sacramento. Despite these setbacks, the bar remained open through several new local sports and entertainment milestones, including Roots, Ballers, and Valkyries seasons. After the Super Bowl and amid upcoming World Cup events, the bar closed. A 2025 crowdfunding effort to convert it into a restaurant and bar did not reach its goal, but residents later planned a reopening.
"For a city with few tried-and-true sports bars, it was a gut punch. Luckily, for East Bay sports fans, the free agent bar didn't have to wait long for a new "team" to scoop it up off waivers. Earlier in May, six Oakland residents announced their plans to reopen the bar. The idea was sparked by two regulars, Jesse and Fred, who recruited the other four."
