Old Skool Cafe in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood is a nonprofit supper club that serves as a training ground for at-risk youth aged 16 to 22. Founded by Teresa Goines, it aims to provide job skills and life lessons through a unique restaurant experience reminiscent of the Harlem Renaissance. Since its inception in 2004 and opening in 2012, Old Skool Cafe has enrolled about 50 students annually in a comprehensive program that includes on-the-job training and externships, helping to equip them for future employment and personal growth.
"I thought if we created our own restaurant, we could make some of our own money to make sure that we could keep it going and not be fully reliant on the state or philanthropy."
"Today, Old Skool Cafe enrolls about 50 students per year in its intensive two-year program, which teaches students restaurant skills like cooking and serving but also life skills, from opening a bank account to preparing for a job interview."
