Oakland to lose its branch of Berkeley icon
"Thanks to the tipster that let Nosh know that Signal Coffee located in the bottom floor off the Tribune Tower has a sign posted in the window announcing a temporary closure. Due to continuing staffing shortages at this location, Signal at Tribune will be closed until further notice while we group, the note read in part. The cafe opened in the tower in April. Signal's cafes in Berkeley, Alameda and San Francisco remain open."
"Top Dog, the Bay's classic outpost for juicy hot links, frankfurters and chicken apple sausages, is counting down its final days in Oakland. Owners Renie and Richard Riemann had decided not to renew their lease after a slew of robberies and financial uncertainty, but said that after business picked back up again, they'd decided to stick around. When a new owner bought the building, however, Top Dog wasn't offered a new lease, forcing the closure of an institution that's been on Lakeshore Ave. since 2011."
Signal Coffee on the bottom floor of Tribune Tower in Oakland is temporarily closed and a sign in the window cites continuing staffing shortages; the location will remain closed until further notice. The cafe opened in the tower in April, while Signal's other cafes in Berkeley, Alameda and San Francisco continue to operate. Top Dog on Lakeshore Avenue is facing closure after the building was sold and the new owner did not offer a lease renewal. Owners Renie and Richard Riemann had considered leaving earlier due to robberies and financial uncertainty but had stayed when business recovered. The original Durant Avenue Berkeley location remains open.
