In Brooklyn, a New Home for Food Books From the Black Diaspora
Briefly

BEM, a bookstore and culinary hub focused on Black foodways, is launching in Brooklyn this fall. Founded by sisters Gabrielle and Danielle Davenport, the shop will offer food literature exclusively from Black authors. Established in 2021, BEM gained popularity through online sales and pop-up events. The new storefront at Lewis Avenue will feature a diverse collection of cookbooks and literary works where food plays a significant role, aiming to serve the local community and celebrate its culture.
According to Danielle, BEM's buyer, the bookstore selection will continue its mission of exploring cookbooks as well as literature in which "food shows up in big and interesting and rich ways."
"People have told us very explicitly, We need this," Danielle says.
