Gap to close last Oakland store this summer; employees offered jobs at nearby locations
"A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based retailer confirmed to ABC7 Eyewitness News that the Gap location on Lakeshore Avenue will shut down this summer when its lease expires. A "For Lease or Sale" sign was posted outside the storefront Tuesday afternoon."
""I have many, many clothes from Gap, and the people who work here, they're fabulous," said Janet Sheard, an Oakland resident. "They're very kind. In fact, I wrote a letter to Gap headquarters expressing my disappointment they were closing Gap in my neighborhood.""
"Gap did not give a reason for the closure but said it is grateful for the team's dedication. The company added that employees will have the opportunity to transfer to nearby stores."
Gap will shut down its remaining East Bay store on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland this summer when the lease expires. A “For Lease or Sale” sign was posted outside the storefront. The closure follows nearly 26 years of operation in Oakland. A longtime customer expressed disappointment, praising the staff and saying she wrote to Gap headquarters about the closing. Gap did not provide a specific reason for the closure, but said it is grateful for the team’s dedication. The company stated employees will have the opportunity to transfer to nearby stores. Several Gap Factory locations remain open throughout the East Bay.
