Former Zuni Cafe and Chez Panisse chef to close famed Berkeley restaurant
"It has been a real delight to feed and get to know you as the seasons rolled by,"
"The team, past and present, has been amazing as well. Standard Fare could not be Standard Fare without you all - and I cannot thank you enough!!"
"Standardfare for us has been not only a restaurant. It's a community hub, it's a place to get energized and inspired by people and team together,"
"Truly can't imagine the East Bay without Standard Fare. Thank you for everything you built, the lessons we learned here, and many wonderful meals on eighth street."
Standard Fare, a cozy counter-service breakfast and lunch spot at 2701 Eighth St. in Berkeley, will close on Dec. 19 after 11 years as chef-owner Kelsie Kerr retires. Kerr, an alum of Chez Panisse and Zuni Cafe, earned praise for organic, veggie-forward salads and sandwiches and for adding a well-received dinner service last year. The announcement prompted heartfelt responses from East Bay peers and former critics celebrating the restaurant's community role. Menu highlights included slow-roasted McFarland Springs pink trout, ricotta toast, and poached pastured eggs with chili crisp. The space is slated to become Cafe Bolita, opening March 2026.
