For the second year in a row, Bay Area city is named best food city in the US
"Following a wave of accolades for Oakland last year, including Food & Wine naming soul food restaurant Burdell Restaurant of the Year, 2025 has been another fantastic year for the East Bay city. Food & Wine also named Oakland chef Steve Joo of Korean spot Joodooboo one of its best new chefs of 2025, and West Oakland fine dining restaurant Sun Moon Studio received its first Michelin star. Food & Wine also anointed Burdell with another award this year: best U.S. restaurant."
""With one of the highest ratios of mom-and-pop spots to chain restaurants, San Francisco is fueled by Pacific seafood, California farmland, and nearby Napa and Sonoma wine regions," Conde Nast Traveler wrote. "It's a place where you can dig into fresh Dungeness crab at Thanh Long, rich cioppino (seafood stew) at Sotto Mare, or clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl at Boudin Bakery.""
""There's no wrong neighborhood from which to start exploring Oakland's staggeringly diverse food scene," read the Conde Nast Traveler story."
Oakland topped the national food-city ranking for a second consecutive year, credited to a staggeringly diverse dining scene across neighborhoods. A national readers' poll collected more than 757,000 votes in the 38th annual Readers' Choice Awards survey, up from roughly 575,000 the prior year. 2025 brought additional honors for Oakland-area restaurants and chefs: Burdell received major national awards, chef Steve Joo of Joodooboo was named among top new chefs, and Sun Moon Studio earned its first Michelin star. San Francisco ranked fifth and was noted for Pacific seafood, farm-driven ingredients, and iconic dishes like Dungeness crab, cioppino, and sourdough bowl clam chowder. The national list also included New Orleans, Milwaukee, Chicago, Lexington, Columbus, Santa Fe, New York City, San Diego, Seattle, Boston, Honolulu, Las Vegas, and Charleston.
