Boichik Bagels, founded by Emily Winston, is set to open its first location in Concord at the end of April, marking its expansion east of Berkeley. Originally from New Jersey, Winston started her bagel-making journey in the Bay Area after being disappointed with local offerings. She aimed to recreate the authentic taste of H&H Bagels that she cherished from her childhood. The new Concord store is anticipated by many who want a high-quality New York-style bagel without the hassle of traffic, reflecting a growing demand for her product in the region.
Winston said she never thought her homemade bagels would turn into a bagel empire until she started selling some out of her house and saw lines down the street.
The everything bagel is by far the most popular, she said. There are a lot of ex East Coasters like me who want a serious New York style bagel, not a fluffy, round bagel or a sourdough bagel.
