Berkeley has installed just over 60% of its planned automated license plate reader (ALPR) network. Police have used the network to close a half-dozen cases.
The plate reader network compares plates of passing cars to local, statewide and national databases of stolen cars and sends notifications in real time.
Skeptics have raised privacy concerns and worries about potential data sharing with federal immigration agents regarding the use of the ALPR technology.
Police hope the technology will help curb auto theft and other serious crimes, but comprehensive evaluations will come later.
