Burdell, Oakland's soul food restaurant, has secured the title of best U.S. restaurant in Food & Wine magazine's Global Tastemakers Awards. Chef-owner Geoff Davis expressed joy over the recognition, celebrating the dedication of his team and the significance of soul food and sustainable farming in Oakland. Opened in fall 2023, Burdell offers reimagined classic soul food with a menu that boasts refined versions of traditional dishes. Burdell stands out among other recognized establishments, including New York's Musket Room and Chicago's Virtue, emphasizing the culinary diversity in the U.S.
"It was an amazing surprise to wake up to today," chef-owner Geoff Davis told SFGATE. "We are just so thrilled for the team's hard work being recognized in this way. [It] is a big win ... not only our team but soul food, local sustainable farming, ranching and Oakland, which deserves more love."
Burdell was among a list of top U.S. restaurants that included the Michelin Guide-listed Musket Room in New York City and the Virtue restaurant in Chicago by James Beard Award-winning chef Erick Williams.
Food & Wine released its annual Global Tastemakers Awards on Wednesday, where it highlighted a selection of the country's best restaurants in addition to the best U.S. cities for food and drink.
Davis previously described his menu as "refined" soul food, given the quality ingredients and culinary techniques.
