In Oakland, following highly publicized immigration raids in Los Angeles, rumors about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity have proliferated. Abby Sullivan Engen from Centro Legal De La Raza emphasizes the challenges these rumors pose, detracting from vital resources aimed at supporting immigrants. The Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership (ACILEP) was established to assist those in need of legal aid and to verify ICE sightings, bolstered by significant funding amidst concerns over federal enforcement actions. Fortunately, no Oakland clients have been detained, despite some reports of targeted ICE enforcement in the area.
We are experiencing an onslaught of rumors and hopefully well-intentioned false reports. But unfortunately, when this happens, it takes away resources from the work.
No Oakland clients of the organization or those who contacted the ACILEP hotline who live in Oakland had been detained.
