In the letters to their city, the students ask for more parks and recreational activities for teens. They want to see their streets cleaned up so they feel safe walking to school.
Sykes hopes that the messages inspire city leaders to pay closer attention to young people's perspectives - especially since young people have gained the right to vote in school board elections this year.
We talk about the bars, smoke shops, and restaurants opening up for 21-year-olds and older, but young people are left out of the conversation.
The whole point is for young people to be heard. Too often as adults, myself included, we overlook their voices.
