The California Academy of Sciences is once again mobilizing community members to document coastal organisms as part of the Snapshot Cal Coast initiative. Devised by Rebecca Johnson and Alison Young, this project utilizes the iNaturalist app to expand research on California's coastal ecosystems. With pressing environmental issues like sea star die-off and "The Blob"—a warm water phenomenon—rising, the June bioblitz encourages public engagement, aligning community efforts with scientific observation to assess biodiversity along the California coast.
"I thought, 'What if we could expand the use of iNaturalist across the whole state and have people that are paying attention everywhere,'" said Rebecca Johnson, highlighting the initiative's intent to engage wider communities.
