Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran known for displaying MAGA banners and American flags at his Escondido home, died after nearly a week in critical condition. Police said the attack occurred May 20 outside his residence. Prosecutors alleged Thomas Caleb Butler, a 32-year-old Navy veteran, carried out an unprovoked assault. Court statements described catastrophic injuries, including a single punch to the jaw followed by additional hits to the head area. Security footage allegedly showed Sheron standing outside before Butler approached and attacked, while a witness attempted to intervene. Butler was arrested nearby shortly after the incident and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and battery. He remained jailed without bail, and prosecutors indicated charges could be upgraded after Sheron’s death.
