This week in Oakland: Aneesa Strings at Yoshi's, and a free mini Uptown stroll
"If you missed Oakland's own Aneesa Strings when she came home last year for a show, this week is your chance to catch the bass player and singer who shot to fame with her cover of Too $hort's "Blow the Whistle." Unfortunately, I can't make it because I'll be hosting the next installment of Culture Makers, a quarterly The Oaklandside event held at The New Parkway."
"The Oakland Heritage Alliance, the organization in charge of preserving Oakland's architectural history, is teaming up with the Fox Theater and other Uptown businesses for the first monthly "Uptown Stroll." The 20-minute walk will be led by J.M. "Scooter" Marriner, who is known for his historical tours of the Fox Theater. Besides the walking tour, there will be three areas with live music, DJs, vendors, and over 22 participating independent small businesses from the neighborhood offering discounts on food and drinks."
Aneesa Strings, an Oakland bass player and singer, gained fame with her cover of Too $hort's "Blow the Whistle" and will perform locally this week. Culture Makers, a quarterly Oaklandside event at The New Parkway, offers a program focused on immigration with conversations featuring people who work with immigrants; tickets remain on sale. Other events include a free Uptown mini-walking tour led by J.M. "Scooter" Marriner highlighting Art Deco buildings and local businesses, a free community event in West Oakland, and two film screenings. Event submissions can be sent to azucena@oaklandside.org or added via the self-submission form on the events calendar.
