A 17-year-old driver is charged with multiple crimes related to death, injury, and hit and run after a crash on an East Oakland sidewalk. At least 10 victims were struck, with three deaths at the scene and additional victims hospitalized, including one in very critical condition. The Alameda County District Attorney announced vehicular manslaughter among the charges but did not specify the full list due to the defendant’s age. The case will remain in juvenile court because it is not eligible for transfer to adult criminal court. The incident occurred shortly before 11:15 p.m. on May 16 when the driver was traveling above 50 mph and attempted a delayed left turn, colliding with multiple people outside a store at the intersection.
"At a press conference inside the René C. Davidson Courthouse on Wednesday, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson announced she is charging the teen with multiple crimes "relating to death, injury, and hit and run," but she declined to elaborate on the number of charges and the specific offenses due to the teen's age."
"There are at least 10 victims of the collision, three of whom died at the scene and one of whom is in "very critical condition" at the hospital, according to the DA. "There is a fourth [victim] that we are hoping pulls through," she told reporters."
"The case, she said, is not eligible to be petitioned to be tried in adult criminal court, meaning it will stay in juvenile court. (For certain serious crimes like murder, prosecutors can file a motion to the court to try a child as an adult, which would transfer the case from juvenile court to adult criminal court.)"
"Just before 11:15 p.m. on May 16, the teen was going above 50 mph on 85th Avenue and was trying to make a delayed left turn onto International Boulevard when he plowed into multiple people outside a store at the intersection, according to OPD."
