Yousof Alsum, a teenager from San Jose, undertook an Eagle Scout project to build two classrooms in Jendel village, Zanzibar, with a group of fellow Scouts and a Tanzanian charity. Inspired by his mother's previous trip to Zanzibar, Alsum aimed to bridge gaps in educational access; over half of local children lack schools. His scoutmaster praised Alsum's leadership skills, noting the project's rarity within the local scouting council. Alsum expressed his desire for a significant impact, reflecting on the challenges and importance of international service in scouting activities.
Last summer, Alsum... built two classrooms for a school in the Jendel village in Zanzibar. I always knew I wanted my project to have a larger impact.
This was a very challenging project, Malik said. But it was not a surprise when he brought it up. Yousof had been talking about this for a while.
