"Candidates are having a difficult time reaching constituents," Jenkins said at the rules committee meeting on Thursday. "The cost of printing, the cost of consulting, the cost to send out mailers, the cost to send out emails-everything has gone up."
The proposal will be considered by the full council on Oct. 1. They also made their case on Monday before the Public Ethics Commission, a volunteer board that enforces Oakland's campaign finance rules. Some members of the ethics commission aren't happy with the idea.
Ramachandran and Jenkins argued for the change during a Rules committee meeting on Thursday. The proposal would essentially restore the higher contribution limits that existed in Oakland before passage of Measure W in the 2022 election.
Measure W also lowered the maximum amount of money Oaklanders could give to political candidates with the intention of reducing the influence of money in politics, but Jenkins and Ramachandran's proposal seeks to undo some of those restrictions.
